April 8 — 9, 2010 — NMF celebrates the Green Earth Book Award
We will bring our 2010 Green Earth Book Award-winners to Salisbury University to take part in their Children’s and Young Adult Literature Festival. Authors will visit schools, conduct talks on campus, and more. Information will be posted as the winning authors are chosen and the events are planned.

April 10, 2010 — Nature Walk on the Chapman DeMary Trail
On Saturday April 10th from 1pm to 2pm, naturalist and Loudoun Valley High School Environmental Explorations teacher, John DeMary will lead a walk on the 1-mile Chapman DeMary Trail which runs along the Catoctin Creek. DeMary will provide information about what makes this such a rich natural environment.

April 12, 2010 — Meadow Planting at Emerick Elementary School
Students at Emerick Elementary in Purcellville, Virginia will be installing their first outdoor classroom! Students voted to install a meadow and are selecting plants for this habitat to attract a variety of pollinators. We welcome you to join the students and get your hands dirty while they teach you all they know about pollinators! Watch for more details about how you can help with this fun meadow habitat.

April 18, 2010 — Nature Walk on the Chapman DeMary Trail
On Sunday, April 18th from 1pm to 2pm, Kristin Zimet from the Virginia Native Plant Society will lead a walk on the 1-mile Chapman DeMary Trail. The focus will be on the native flora growing along the Chapman DeMary Trail.

This April 22 is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day! We are hearing a call from all types of organizations - including the White House - for individuals to renew the spirit of Earth Day. While every day is Earth Day at NMF, we also want to renew our efforts in celebration of this historic global movement. We are asking you to give $40 in honor of the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day!

April 26, 2010 — Wildlife Refueling Station Planting at Hillsboro Elementary School
Students at Hillsboro Elementary in Hillsboro, Virginia will be installing a Wildlife Refueling Station. Each class has its own native bird and is working to select the plants that will attract these birds for this wonderful habitat. enGAUGE It provides students with the tools to educate drivers in their communities about the benefits of checking and correcting tire pressure each month. Several enGAUGE It events are happening in April with our partner high schools and youth groups.

Come out to Whitlow’s on Wilson at 2854 Wilson Boulevard in Clarendon, VA from 6-9 pm. Grab your colleagues and stop by after work! We’ll have appetizers, a 50/50 raffle, Costa Rica raffle tickets for sale, and a cash bar. All proceeds will benefit our programs. Please come by!
October 30, 2009 — NMF celebrates the grand opening of the Chapman/DeMary Trail
We are pleased to announce the grand opening of the Chapman/DeMary Trail in Purcellville, Virginia! Located on some of the last remaining undeveloped land in Purcellville and named after the two gentlemen who made it happen, the trail will be dedicated with a ceremony at the trail site at 2:45 p.m. as well as an open house afterwards at Magnolia’s Restaurant in Purcellville.

May 6, 2009 — Butterfly Garden Groundbreaking at Hillsboro Elementary
Come join us as we install the first outdoor classroom at Hillsboro Elementary in Hillsboro, Virginia! The outdoor classroom will be a butterfly garden between the school and the building where art and music classes are held. Each class will come out and plant a different section of the garden.

April 15, 2009 — NMF honors the Green Earth Book Award Winners
Join us as we honor our 2009 Green Earth Book Award winners during an Environmental Literature Festival! On April 15 in Holloway Hall at Salisbury University, our Green Earth Book Award winners will discuss their writing and their passion for environmental issues. Ted and Betsy Lewin, known for their books and amazing illustrations, will provide the key note address. Books will be for sale and the authors will be available for book signing after the event. This event is free and open to the public.

April 22, 2009 — NMF Kicks Off enGAUGE It Program
Join us and our partners, Loudoun Valley High School and the Town of Purcellville, as we launch our enGAUGE It program! On Earth Day in Purcellville, Virginia, Loudoun Valley High School students will hand out free tire gauges and teach residents about keeping tires properly inflated. This event launches enGAUGE It, our national campaign aiming to enlist 2,010 high schools to participate in 2010.

Join NMF on Friday, April 24, 2009 at Stonewall Golf Course for the Greater Washington Eco Golf Classic. The day will be filled with exciting activity — Putting Contest, Shot-Gun Start, lunch on the turn, multiple hole contests, Live and Silent Auction, Network Reception and barbeque. April 25, 2009 — Hike with Hillsboro Elementary Students
Join the students from Hillsboro Elementary School on a hike at the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship on Saturday, April 25 from 10am to 12pm. John DeMary and his students from the Loudoun Valley High School Environmental Explorations class will be hiking with us to point out various plants and wildlife we see along the trail. Bring your own lunch to enjoy after the hike.

March 6, 2009 — “It’s All about the Appalachian Trail”
Join us at the Old Stone School in Hillsboro, Virginia on March 6 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm for exciting and entertaining presentations about the natural history of the Appalachian Trail. Guest speakers include Mike Hayslett, a herpetologist who has hiked portions of the trail with his son, and Rita Hennessy, Outdoor Recreation Specialist with the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. REI will also be there to provide information about trail gear. Camping refreshments will be provided by the Newton Marasco Foundation. “It’s All about the AT” is part of the NMF’s Engaging the Environment in Loudoun community outreach series.

March 14, 2009 — Bluebird Workshop
On March 14, from 1pm to 4pm, teacher John DeMary and his students from the Loudoun Valley High School Environmental Explorations class will go to Hillsboro Elementary school to provide information about bluebirds, and then help Hillsboro Elementary students build their own bluebird boxes. Twelve bluebird boxes will be made for the outdoor classrooms at Hillsboro Elementary.

May 15, 2008 —NMF hosts the play A Sense of Wonder and awards our Loudoun County, Virginia Rachel Carson Scholars and Loudoun Goes Green poster contest winners.
We will award our Loudoun County, Virginia Rachel Carson Scholars on May 15, 2008 at the Old Stone School in Hillsboro, Virginia. In conjunction with the award ceremony, we will be presenting a one-woman play on the life of Rachel Carson called A Sense of Wonder. The event is free and open to the public.

Sponsored by the Executive Women in Government (EWG), the Holiday Tea and Bazaar will be held on December 4 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Ritz Carlton in Pentagon City, Virginia. This event features a holiday bazaar of unique gift items from local artists, a silent auction, and an elegant tea, as well as guest speaker, Amy Newton speaking on “chapters of life.” Thanks to EWG for choosing NMF as the recipient of funds that will be raised at this event!

NMF is working with local, state and the federal government to declare May 27, 2007 Rachel Carson Day, a pesticide-free day in communities across the nation.

Green Earth Book Award-winning authors Sneed Collard III and Melissa Stewart will be talking with 2nd and 3rd graders from the Arlington Science Focus School in Arlington, Virginia about the writing process and their love of the environment.

NMF will host a press event at the Miller Senate Building in Annapolis, Maryland on March 6, 2007 at 12:00 noon to kickoff our Rachel Carson Centennial Celebration and Rachel Carson Scholar Program. We are pleased to be joined by Maryland State Senator Brian Frosh who will announce legislation to mark May 27 as Rachel Carson Day in the state of Maryland. This event is offered to NMF sponsors, donors and volunteers. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception, followed by the movie and a panel discussion.
