Among her many contributions to the modern environmental movement, one of Rachel Carson’s most renowned efforts was igniting public awareness to the importance of protecting the environment. On May 27, 2007, the nation will celebrate the 100th birthday of Miss Carson. In commemoration of the anniversary of Miss Carson’s 100th birthday and to advance her crucial message of environmental stewardship, NMF is partnering with actress Kaiulani Lee to present the one-woman play, A Sense of Wonder.
The Rachel Carson Centennial Celebration was kicked off this fall in Washington, D.C. and New York City with the presentation of A Sense of Wonder.

A Sense of Wonder is based on the life and works of Rachel Carson. It is the story of one woman’s love for the natural world and her fight to defend it. It is the story of the extremely private Rachel Carson thrust into the role of controversial public figure. Written and performed by Kaiulani Lee, the play has been performed throughout the world. It was featured at the 2005 World Expo in Japan and has been performed in England, Italy, and continues to play throughout the provinces of Canada. The play was created with the help and guidance of many of Miss Carson’s friends and colleagues and with permission from the Rachel Carson estate.
Kaiulani Lee brings to the writing and acting of A Sense of Wonder over 35 years of experience in theatre, film and television. She has starred in over a dozen plays on and off-Broadway, has been nominated for the Drama Desk Award on Broadway and won an OBIE Award for outstanding achievement off-Broadway. Her television series work ranges from The Waltons to Law & Order in addition to numerous movies of the week. Her film debut was in The World According to Garp and continues through A Civil Action. In the critically acclaimed PBS film, A Midwife’s Tale, she starred as the midwife, Martha Ballard.
The reviews for her performances in A Sense of Wonder range from Miss Carson’s biographer, Paul Brooks writing, “…This is the Rachel I knew brought to life with almost uncanny skill and understanding…” to Peter Dykstra of CNN “…Kaiulani Lee’s performance gave me the opportunity to feel I had met this remarkable woman and experienced the quiet courage of Rachel Carson.”
In addition to Ms. Lee’s full commitment to getting Miss Carson’s story out to audiences across the world, she is on the faculty of George Mason University’s Theatre Department and the New York University’s Film School. She has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Bowdoin College for her contribution to and excellence in the performing arts.
The Newton Marasco Foundation (NMF) will be hosting a number of events in the months leading up to Miss Carson’s centennial birthday. By encouraging public participation in these events, and providing a forum to discuss current environmental challenges, NMF hopes to carry on Miss Carson’s work to inspire environmental stewardship and activism.
