Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be published in the United States during 2007
  • Must be written in English (can be translated into English or be a bi-lingual book that contains English as one of the languages)
  • Must be a trade book of fiction or non-fiction
  • Must contain themes or content related to the environment and the concept of environmental stewardship
  • Picture books are eligible

Award Criteria

Children's and Young Adult Fiction Awards

  • Writing style must be appropriate for the age intended
  • The text must meet established standards of quality writing
  • Illustrations and other graphics should enhance the reader’s experience and awareness of the theme in the book
  • The book should either promote an inspired understanding of the environment, an awareness of environmental issues, or a celebration of nature
  • The book should encourage the concept of environmental stewardship and the role each of us can play in nurturing, protecting, and defending our environment
  • Environmental issues presented must be current and accurately portrayed

Nonfiction Award

Criteria are the same as for the Children's and Young Adult Fiction Awards with the following addition:

  • The book’s formatting (bibliography, glossary, index, table of contents, captions, appendices, etc.) should enhance the clarity and attractiveness of the subject matter.

Nomination Instructions for 2008

Nominations must be provided by November 1, 2007. We are requiring that any organization or individual that nominates a book provide eight review copies (note that advance reader copies are acceptable). The accompanying nomination form should be completed and sent to Jenny Newton Schmidt, Director of Foundation Programs at jenny@newtonmarascofoundation.org or to the address below. Review copies of books should be mailed to:
