2012 Green Earth Book Award
Eligibility
- Must be published in the United States during 2011
- Must be written in English (can be translated into English or be a bilingual book that contains English as one of the languages)
- Must be a trade book
- Must contain themes or content related to the environment and the concept of environmental stewardship
Award Criteria
Picture Book Award
- The writing style captures the child’s interest and is appropriate for the age intended, and the text meets required standards of quality writing.
- The text and graphics/illustrations/cover enhance the reader's experience and awareness of the theme in the book, as well as the general appeal and attractiveness of the book.
- The book either promotes an inspired understanding of the environment, an awareness of environmental issues, or a celebration of nature.
- The book encourages the concept of environmental stewardship and the role each of us can play in nurturing, protecting, and defending our environment.
- Environmental issues are current and accurately portrayed.
Children’s and Young Adult Nonfiction Awards
- The writing style captures the child’s interest and is appropriate for the age intended, and the text meets required standards of quality writing.
- The book either promotes an inspired understanding of the environment or an awareness of environmental issues.
- The book encourages the concept of environmental stewardship and the importance of the role each of us play in nurturing, protecting, and defending our environment.
- Environmental issues presented are current and accurately portrayed.
- Information provided in the book’s bibliography, glossary, index, table of contents, captions, appendices, associated web sites, etc. enhances the clarity of the subject matter.
- The cover, photographs, illustrations, and aesthetic devices enhance the general appeal and attractiveness of the book.
Children’s and Young Adult Fiction Awards
- The writing style captures the child’s interest and is appropriate for the age intended.
- The text meets required standards of quality writing.
- The book either promotes an inspired understanding of the environment or an awareness of environmental issues.
- The book encourages the concept of environmental stewardship and the importance of the role each of us play in nurturing, protecting, and defending our environment.
- Environmental issues presented are current and accurately portrayed.
Nomination Instructions
Nominations must be provided by November 1, 2011. We require ten review copies (note that advance reader copies are acceptable). The accompanying nomination form must be completed for each nominated book and sent to Jenny Newton Schmidt, Program Director atjschmidt@newtonmarascofoundation.org or to the address below. Review copies of books should be mailed to:

Attention: Green Earth Book Award
The list of nominations that make the“short list” will be announced in December 2011. The winning books in all categories will be announced in January 2012. Awards will be presented to the winning authors, illustrators, and photographers on April 11, 2012 in Salisbury, Maryland. The award ceremony will be conducted during Salisbury University’s Read Green Festival.
