NMF designs programs for the youngest of our nation’s youth in an effort to instill the ethos of environmental stewardship at an early age. Our elementary school programs seek to give children hands-on experiences with their environment as well as environmental issues facing our world today.
Projects include:
Our Chesapeake volunteers worked with faculty and staff at Easton Elementary School in Easton, Maryland to implement a plastic recycling program. The program gives all 605 students hands-on experience in plastic recycling as part of a school-wide service project. The program has been a resounding success; students are talking about recycling, are excited about the work they are doing and are even encouraging their families to recycle at home.
Our Colorado volunteers are working with Mead Elementary School in Mead, Colorado to support a weather monitoring project. With the support of weather station equipment purchased by NMF and donated to the school, students will get hands-on experience in monitoring weather conditions and applying the data in daily lessons.
Our North Carolina volunteers worked with the Montessori School in Jacksonville, North Carolina to develop a curriculum for elementary school-level students. Activities were developed for each day during Earth Day week and included environmental lessons, nature walks, art projects and more.
Our award program involved elementary school students who participated on an advisory panel to help us choose the winning books. Our panel members are listed below.
