Greening Buildings, Schools and Homes

NMF is working to develop partnerships and provide technical and financial assistance to public and nonprofit organizations in the application of sustainable development concepts (e.g., brownfields cleanup/reuse, green buildings/landscaping, new urbanism) at public-use oriented projects (e.g., public health clinics, food banks, affordable housing, educational facilities, parks, recreational areas, art facilities, cultural/historic preservation), especially in needy or traditionally underserved communities. One focus of the program is on providing expertise and advice to ensure that homes and buildings meet high-performance green building standards as defined by the United States Green Building Council of which NMF is a member.

Project Highlight: Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia

NMF is working with Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia and has been officially designated as its “green” partner. NMF will be advising this Habitat affiliate on how to green every project in its building pipeline. In addition, NMF and the Environmental and Organizational Services (EOS) business unit of SRA International are working with Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia in raising money and providing volunteers for their green refurbishment project to create 12 condominiums that meet exceptional green building standards.

We are providing direct support to those impacted by Hurricane Katrina by working with Habitat for Humanity to rebuild roofs and water seal homes in Mississippi. We are coordinating our efforts with those of Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia through one of our Advisory Board members who is the President of Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia. We immediately donated $5,000 for Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia to directly help a Habitat affiliate in Mississippi and are providing volunteers to help with the rebuilds.
